Volf, a satyr friend who has agreed to support him in attacking the tax collectors comes to the trod where Ygraine and the crew are preparing the ambush and informs them that Chief attacked the king’s men in their barracks, murdered two of them and was taken captive and that his fate has yet to be determined. Alonzo quickly realizes that if Chief is in the hands of Baron he could force Chief to divulge their plans, so it becomes imperative to rescue Chief, however much they may be angry with him for endangering their mission.
Alonzo has his Volf go off and find another member of the Merry Men, Dinty, an eshu, who knows Wayfare, who can teleport Alonzo into Chief’s cell. Cassandra, meanwhile whips up a concealing spell together with Alonzo in order to alter his appearance into that of a living shadow. The plan is to masquerade as “The King’s Hand”, a vigilante enforcing the king’s rule and pretend to murder to Chief while breaking him out and so conceal from the Baron the real threat the pose to him and his men.
Once in the cell Alonzo frightens the guard who is there watching Chief, then proceeds to cut Chief up and put on a show of attacking him, making it appear that he does more damage than he actually does. He then tells the guard that “this is the King’s justice”, and sends a signal via the “farnsworth” device Ygraine and Fred whipped up, to his eshu friend to teleport him and Chief out of the cell.
When Chief is returned Reah lays her hands on his wounds to stabilize them, though he remains unconscious for the time being. The crew chooses their strategic positions and prepares themselves for the ambush in the morning.
